Inspiration
Front view showing natural textures of the fabric. Image is left white as white acrylic is applied to the fabric, creating a minimal textural work. The fabric is attached to a circular canvas or plywood hoop.

Transition is inspired by a moment of movement and mindfulness.
The movement of light dancing through the leaves of a woodland canopy. Dappled light flickers and shimmers on the forest floor all around us.
This special kind of light is called 'komorebi' in Japanese and is beautifully uplifting. When experiencing forest-bathing or 'shinrin-yoku', this light adds a truly wonderful dimension for the senses.
Transition is a humble reminder of this playful, peaceful moment of beauty. The feeling of softly walking in this environment, of hearing the breeze rustle the leaves and the gentle warmth of the light on our faces.
Inspired by the ancient traditions of wrapping and weaving, Saskia uses humble, domestic and natural materials to create contemporary art. These processes link us to the crafts that have always served a purpose in our lives, and a gentle calming moment in our minds.
Created on a circular canvas, Transition reminds us that we are all a part of the natural cycles of our world. Seasons continuously transition from one to another. We are on a path, a glorious trajectory from birth to death, and we can use these experiences and focal points of art, as humble reminders of our awareness of this present moment.

Outline of the creative process
To create the Transition series, vintage household linens are sourced and individually cut by hand into long, naturally frayed strips.

The strips are then wrapped around the canvas, echoing the humble domestic activities of wrapping, enveloping and folding. Each piece wraps in a memory, a moment of calm from the Komorebi experience.

The lengths of linens tumble down the canvas, enabling us to feel the light pouring down.

Acrylic paint is gently applied. As each brushstroke touches the fabric, it subtly moves, folds and accommodates, finally settling into an organic formation. The materials truly shift and shape themselves as naturally as the light falling through the tree canopy.
